What Indian Viewers Can Take Away From Reliance’s New Documentary

50 years of Reliance is a LOT of ground to cover. Parvah Hai Toh Parivar Hai goes beyond the greatest hits of a long journey and spends time with the people and stories that have shaped Reliance.

Here’s what stood out to us, as Indian viewers, once the credits rolled.

#1 A legacy is made of more than just milestones

Ask most companies what their legacy is and you’ll get a list: businesses built, industries entered, milestones racked up.

Parvah Hai Toh Parivar Hai answers that question from the heart instead.

It spotlights people and stories, and in doing so, gives audiences a pretty unique read on what a legacy can look like: something that’s shared!

#2 At Reliance, ‘family’ is a pretty big idea

We’ve already told you the documentary is full of people and their stories.

What we haven’t told you is that, at Reliance, those people aren’t just employees or beneficiaries. They’re family – full stop.

Reliance stretches that word about as far as it’ll go – from the Ambanis, to employees, to strangers who have no obvious connection to the company at all. Family, for them, is simply just who you choose to look out for.

Which is also where Reliance’s core value of “We Care” starts to feel super relevant!

The documentary shows an authentic way to live up to a one-line company value, and that’s probably why it works.

#3 A good story still does the trick

This might be the biggest takeaway for us.

You can have dozens of businesses and enough achievements to fill a very, very long deck.

But none of that, by itself, makes people care.
Stories do.

The documentary puts faces to businesses and people to milestones – showing the marketing world once again that no amount of scale can replace a good story.

If brands take one thing away from this, let it be this: storytelling isn’t reserved for entertainment and lifestyle folks! So, keep telling good stories. 🙂

#4 The format matters almost as much as the story

Imagine all of this in a corporate brochure.

50 years of Reliance’s core value. Business verticals. Milestones. Numbers.

Yawn.

Put the exact same info into a documentary and you make room for context, emotion, characters, and heartfelt stories.

And that completely changes the way you see the brand!

It’s also a nice reminder: if your content marketing is good enough, people won’t mind that there’s a brand behind it.

#5 Long-form storytelling might just be having its moment again

As I sit here writing this decidedly long article, this is exactly the kind of thing I like to see.

Reliance’s real win here wasn’t trying to cram 50 years into a string of snappy reels.

Instead, they let the story take as long as it needed to. Fifty years, told at 50-years’ pace, instead of chopped up for maximum scroll-ability.

And that’s a solid lesson for marketers everywhere: long-form still has a place in marketing, especially when there’s actually a lot to say!

If you’re wondering what any of this looks like beyond our words, watch the documentary here.
