IKEA Turned Its Most Common Case of Mistaken Identity Into a Campaign

People wearing yellow inside IKEA get mistaken for employees more often than you’d think. IKEA decided to lean into the mix-up — and built an entire campaign out of it.

The carousel, in text

1. People wearing yellow in IKEA often get mistaken for an IKEA employee. Here’s the campaign that turned this to their advantage.

2. The problem: IKEA sees a 600% increase in footfall during the sale season. More people means more business — but the number of employees to attend to the growing footfall remains the same.

3. The solution: IKEA thought, if people wearing yellow are casually mistaken for employees, why not make them? Enter IKEA’s Co-Worker of the Day campaign.

4. People wearing yellow could volunteer to be an IKEA employee for a day. They could pick up an ID card and download an app which helped them answer all the questions coming their way.

5. The best part? They were rewarded with IKEA gift vouchers at the end of their shift.

6. You go to shop, you help fellow shoppers, you come back with free furniture.

7. Cool, cool, cool, cool, cool, cool, cool.
