Billions of cardboard boxes are discarded after being used just once each year.
In an effort to reduce its environmental footprint, Samsung has introduced the Eco-Package concept which aims to reduce waste by providing customers with ways to repurpose its television packaging into new household items.
The company provides DIY ideas for upcycling the leftover boxes into shelves, magazine racks, and other useful objects. There’s even an adorable cat house!
The packaging comes with a manual that can be accessed by scanning the QR code on the box. To make things easier, the boxes are even imprinted with a series of dots that makes it easy to cut into the required shapes.
The electronics manufacturer also partnered with Dezeen, the architecture and design magazine, for a global contest called ‘Out of the Box’ where contestants were challenged to design innovative new objects for the home by repurposing cardboard packaging.
The contest received over 1,500 entries from more than 80 different countries around the world and the finalists for the competition included a rocking horse, a series of animal companions and three storage solutions.
